California Highway Patrol

MTC works with the California Highway Patrol to increase the safety and efficiency of the Bay Area highway network.

The CHP is a key partner in MTC’s 511 traveler information system, and in the Freeway Service Patrol fleet of roving tow trucks.

MTC is installing equipment and observation areas along the growing network of Bay Area Express Lanes to help the CHP enforce proper use of the lanes.

Conversions of existing carpool lanes to express lanes also include striping lanes and installing signs and sign gantries, FasTrak® toll tag readers and video cameras to monitor traffic conditions.

The CHP is responsible for patrolling the popular bicycle/ pedestrian path on the new Bay Bridge East Span.

The 15-foot-wide path has one lane in each direction for bicyclists, and an outside lane designated for walkers.

MTC’s Freeway Service Patrol is a joint venture with the CHP and Caltrans.

FSP tow trucks assist over 20,000 drivers each month. Get more details on our FSP tow trucks.
