Interns assigned to government and transportation agencies throughout the Bay Area
The 2013 class poses with their mentors and MTC staff

Forty-seven teenagers took an important step towards a career in public service today at the inaugural meeting of the high school internship program, held at MTC headquarters in Oakland.

Now in its 13th year, MTC's high school internship program presents an invaluable opportunity for young adults to gain exposure and paid experience in the field of transportation.

Over 700 applicants applied to the program this year, with 47 lucky finalists selected to participate. Students are placed at 40 different partner agencies in nine county Bay Area region. Those applying to the program have to live and attend school in the same county as the internship position.

Bryon Castanada, one of the students selected, is planning to attend college in civil engineering and was hoping to pursue an internship related to his future course of study. "My school counselor recommended it to me. I can't wait to get started!" he said.

Interns are assigned to county public works agencies, public transit operators and county planning agencies throughout the Bay Area. They work on a variety of tasks ranging from administrative work to surveying and inspecting road conditions to making conditions safer for bikes and pedestrians.

Students will present the projects they worked on at a forum at the close of the program in August.
