MTC is partnering with Caltrans and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority to provide travel options that will improve traffic congestion on I-680 in Contra Costa County.
MTC opened Express Lanes between Walnut Creek and San Ramon in October 2017 and broke ground in October 2018 on a new project to establish a southbound Express Lane from Martinez all the way to the Alameda County line. In summer 2020, additional HOV capacity for vehicles with 2 or more people opened southbound in Walnut Creek.

- Build a northbound express lane from North Main Street in Walnut Creek to Marina Vista Avenue in Martinez by adding a lane and converting existing carpool lanes.
Project 1 is under construction and scheduled to be complete by 2021. Learn more about project construction. In summer 2020, the project cleared a major milestone when a new HOV lane opened to vehicles with 2 or more people. Learn more about these managed lanes.
The schedule for Project 2 will be determined once funding is secured.
