New East Span: Hinge & Joint Work on the Oakland Touchdown

While its not as visually striking as the tower portion of the new Bay Bridge East Span, the project to build a touchdown at the Oakland shoreline is an essential element of the span. News videographer Mark Jones was on hand last weekend as crews installed a seismic joint and hinge pipe beam — part of a complex system to allow the roadways to survive a major earthquake.
