MTC’s Vital Signs project won an award in the category of public outreach programs from the California Transportation Foundation.
Federal Planning Certification
Sacramento, May 31
The Federal Highway and Transit Administrations have completed their review of MTC’s planning process and have certified that we meet all applicable requirements of federal law. This certification is valid until our next review in 2020.
Bay Area Partnership
San Francisco, June 1
The regular Bay Area Partnership meeting featured discussion about OBAG 2 and the ongoing update of Plan Bay Area 2040.
ITS America Conference
San Jose, June 13-16
Chair Cortese, Commissioner Liccardo, and Melanie Crotty spoke at the national conference of ITS America. Over 1,900 attended the event, which showcased the transportation technology leadership of the San Francisco Bay Area. Among the many exhibits and activities, perhaps the coolest was the workshop where a San Jose high school class got to build their own connected and automated vehicles using a 3-D printer.

Sacramento, June 14
Using data from the International Monetary Fund and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the state Department of Finance announced that California has become the 6th largest economy in the world – just ahead of the Republic of France.
Big 5 Meeting
San Francisco, June 15
I hosted my counterparts from the state’s largest MPOs to discuss several issues related to the current and upcoming cycles of Sustainable Community Strategies. They were very impressed by the new Bay Area Metro Center. They were even more impressed that I treated them to a San Francisco Giants game after the meeting concluded.
MTI Finance Summit
San Francisco, June 17
I participated in a panel discussion with several regional colleagues sponsored by the Mineta Transportation Institute and hosted by the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco.
New Bay Trail Maps
The San Francisco Bay Trail Project released an updated set of maps that highlight over 350 miles of trail now open to the public, including an additional 15 miles of trails completed since the 2013 edition. The new maps are provided to the Commission in recognition of MTC's long-term financial support for this valuable regional resource. Bay Area Housing Production: Forecast vs. Observed
This map depicts housing production performance for Bay Area jurisdictions between January 2010 and December 2015, and housing production over the past year. Key conclusions are summarized below:
- Based on the last six years of growth, the region won’t hit its overall 2040 housing target until 2065. By contrast, the 2015 number of total jobs (4.0 million) has occurred five years ahead of the forecasted schedule.
- Only a quarter of the region’s cities are on track to achieve their 2040 housing targets. Approximately one-third of the region’s cities won’t achieve their 2040 housing targets until 2100 or later based on their six-year housing production rates.
- Housing production rates in the “Big 3” cities dipped slightly in 2015. While San Francisco continues to be on track to meet its forecasted housing level, San Jose will not meet its target until after 2060 if it continues the 2015 housing production rate. The housing situation in Oakland won’t achieve its 2040 housing target until the late 2100s given its worsened trajectory.
