Dumbarton Bridge Closure: Labor Day Weekend 2012

A planned shutdown of the Dumbarton Bridge over Labor Day weekend 2012 allowed crews to install a critical seismic joint at on the eastern side of the bridge where the concrete approach meets the steel box girder section of the bridge.

Videographer Mark Jones was on the scene before and during the operation, and explains how the bridge was lifted several inches with hydraulic jacks as the weekend began, so crews could install that joint. Now that the joint has been installed, crews can work below the bridge deck, and for the next few months, continue the process of installing 96 seismic bearings to make the Dumbarton Bridge even safer during a major earthquake.
