2009 Team Bike Challenge Winners Announced

The results for the month-long Team Bike Challenge are in, with Team Tour de Turtle from Marmot Mountain in Sonoma County declared the winner among all nine Bay Area counties. The five members together earned 594 points and rode a total of 982 miles in May. Second place was a tie between Team BORAT of Santa Clara and Team Full Tilt from Marin. Third place went to OUTSPOKIN, another Marmot Mountain team from Sonoma.

Now in its fourth year, Team Bike Challenge brings together groups of up to five cyclists who compete to ride their bikes for transportation as many days as possible in the month of May. Novices earn the most points (five per trip), as the competition is designed to encourage new bike commuters to ride together with more experienced cyclists for support and encouragement.

In a related event, the Company Bike Challenge returned for its second year, with companies vying to amass the most teams and points; winners were announced in three categories: large, medium and small companies.

Team Bike Challenge is an outgrowth of the Bay Area’s Bike to Work Day promotion, which MTC sponsors in conjunction with the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition and private sponsors. According to Andrew Casteel, executive director of the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition, the 521 teams in this year’s competition biked a total of 275,273 miles, offsetting 267,015 pounds of pollution from the air, burning 11,836,739 calories and saving $144,518 in gas money. Altogether, 121 companies participated in the competition this year. The teams from Cisco Systems biked an incredible 25,635 miles. At Marmot Mountain, an impressive 30 percent of the employees participated in the challenge. Members of the region's top-scoring team win the privilege of placing a bike rack in a public location of their choice.
