With public transit ridership shifting dramatically since the COVID-19 pandemic, MTC set out to take a fresh look at who’s riding transit and why they travel. The Regional Transit Passenger Snapshot Survey (Snapshot Survey) gathered data from more than 16,500 riders on 23 of the Bay Area’s 25 federally funded transit agencies during Fall 2023 and Spring 2024.

The Snapshot Survey Dashboard offers insights on who rides transit in the Bay Area and what matters most to them. Dashboard users can view data including:

  • Demographics (income, race and ethnicity, county of residence)
  • Why and how often people ride transit
  • How safe riders feel
  • Whether transit users have access to a car to make their trips
  • What transit service improvements they’d like to see

Results can also be explored for each individual transit agency.

About the 2023-2024 Snapshot Survey

The 2023-2024 Snapshot Survey was available in English, Spanish and Chinese. The Snapshot Survey took approximately one year to complete.

The Snapshot Survey is similar to but smaller in scope than the Transit Passenger Survey, which takes approximately five to seven years to complete. The Snapshot Survey:

  • Collected fewer samples
  • Did not include every transit route
  • Featured a simple survey questionnaire

All of these simplifications allow data collection for the entire Bay Area to be completed in shorter timeframe.
