Bay Bridge Eastbound Drivers: Prepare for Detour to Begin Memorial Day Weekend

The good news is that the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will remain open this Memorial Day Weekend. The not-so-good news for drivers heading east late at night is that select eastbound lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, while a small detour is implemented that will accelerate work on the new East Span.

After the work is completed, eastbound motorists will experience a slightly different approach into Oakland as they emerge from under the upper deck. Westbound traffic will not be impacted during this stage of the construction, but a westbound detour in early 2012 will also be necessary to realign traffic so that construction crews can work between the existing and new bridges.

Without these detours, eastbound traffic would have stayed on the original bridge for about six months after westbound traffic traveled on the new bridge.

To learn more about the detour and construction, including interactive 3-D technology and a mobile app that drops you into the driver’s seat and lets you cruise the new East Span of the Bay Bridge during construction, see the press release (PDF) from the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Projects Public Information Office.
