“Bring us your tired, your rusty, your broken bicycles.” That’s the motto of MTC’s Bay Area BikeMobile program — a bike repair shop on wheels that appears at schools, libraries and festivals. The van’s free, hands-on repair clinics get people back on their bikes and help them become more confident and empowered riders. The Bay Area BikeMobile focuses on serving low-income communities, but is open to everyone, with no questions asked. The program is funded by MTC’s Spare the Air Youth Program, a joint project of MTC and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and part of MTC’s Climate Initiatives Program.

The original idea for the BikeMobile came from the Alameda County Transportation Commission, which received an Innovative Grant from MTC’s Climate Initiatives Program to get the initial van rolling. Today, the Alameda County BikeMobile continues to serve Alameda County residents via the county’s Safe Routes to School Program.
