International Walk, Bike & Roll to School Week
Events Happening October 7–11, 2024
International Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day will be celebrated this year on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, and there are events happening in Bay Area communities all week long. Two dozen Bay Area schools have registered as participating in this year’s events. Visit the websites below for resources and events near you.
- The Alameda County Safe Routes to School website has toolkits and other resources. Last year, on Walk and Roll to School Day, only 31% of students arrived at school by car. The rest used sustainable modes like walking (38%), rolling (17%), carpooling (11%) or transit (3%).
- Throughout the fall, Marin County is encouraging students to participate in Walk & Roll Wednesdays, the first Wednesday of each month. There are Suggested Route Maps to help families get started.
- The Safe Routes to School San Francisco website has resources for families and for school staff with tips on how to walk, bike, carpool or take transit to school – all “green” options that are better for the environment.
- The Solano County Safe Routes to School website has even more resources, including several key videos and fliers in Spanish.
- Sonoma Safe Routes to School is featuring a Walk & Roll Anywhere Challenge in October. Sign up for a chance to win a family ice cream outing!
MTC’s One Bay Area Grant (OBAG) program funds the Regional Safe Routes to School grant program, providing about $5 million in Federal grants each year for grants to cities, counties and county transportation agencies. The Safe Routes to School programs create safer routes for walking or biking to school, and offer training, education and encouragement to students and parents on safe ways to travel by foot or by wheel.
