May 7 is National Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day

May is National Bike Month, and National Bike & Roll to School Day is happening on Wednesday,  May 7, 2025. There are events throughout the week all across the Bay Area. 

Alameda County schools will celebrate this year on Thursday, May 15. Check with your school to find out what’s happening, including where to find the fan-favorite Bike Blender – a human-powered smoothie machine!

While Contra Costa does not have a dedicated Bike to School Day event, they are encouraging children and adults to participate in Bike to Wherever Days 2025. The big events are happening on Thursday, May 15, including snacks and freebies at energizer stations.

Marin County schools will celebrate on May 7, and you can nominate a student Bike Hero through May 17. Any elementary or middle school student who is dedicated to active transportation and spreads the joy of biking, walking or rolling to school can qualify to win one of two $50 gift cards.

Napa County is celebrating biking to school and to work on Thursday, May 15, as Napa County Bike to Work & School Day. Riders of all ages are encouraged to stop by an energizer station for prizes, snacks and fun with fellow cyclists.

The San Francisco United School District (SFUSD) is celebrating a whole week of events as part of Bike & Roll to School Week, May 5 through 9 – register your school or get in touch with your school administrators to see if your school is participating. Enter the SFUSD art contest by May 15 for a chance to win prizes.

San Mateo County schools are participating in Walk and Roll to School Day on May 7. Check with your school to find out about specific events. The San Mateo County Safe Routes to School Guidebook has great tips for safety and to determine if your child is ready to walk or bike to school alone.

Santa Clara County is marking Bike to School Day on May 7 with different activities, including a bike rack decorating contest. Schools must register by May 2 to participate in the contest.

Solano County schools will celebrate on May 7 by encouraging families and school staff to walk, bike, scoot or roll to class. Anything goes, so long as it’s an active way to get to school. Check out their safe biking and walking resources with tips you can use all year.

Sonoma County schools are celebrating National Bike to School Day on May 7. Check with your school to see if they are participating. Report that you participated and share photos of the day with the Sonoma County Safe Routes to School team.

MTC supports Safe Routes to School programs in partnership with local bicycle coalitions and schools across the Bay Area. Join group rides, community walking events and other activities designed to encourage families to walk, bike or roll to school.
