MTC Annual Report 2005
2005 Annual Report Focuses on Bridge Upgrade Program
You can tell a book by its cover, at least in the case of the just-released 2005 MTC Annual Report. The front features a close-up photo of a massive precast concrete deck segment being lifted into place on the new East Span of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge. The interplay of form and shadow makes for an intriguing abstract image, and signals the report’s theme: “Bay Area Bridges: Stronger. Sleeker. Safer.”
In words and striking photos (mostly by Caltrans District 4 photographers Bill Hall and John Huseby), the booklet chronicles progress on expanding, strengthening and rehabilitating the region’s seven state-owned toll bridges. At the same time, the report highlights the expanded role that the Bay Area Toll Authority — an increasingly prominent subunit of MTC — plays in planning, financing and overseeing these vital lifelines, in partnership with Caltrans and the California Transportation Commission.
The star of the report is the new East Span, which not only promises to become a visually stunning addition to the Bay Area skyline, but also crossed several crucial milestones last year.
