MTC Augments Bike Share Expansion Proposal
A revised staff proposal unveiled at today’s MTC Administration Committee meeting would add new features to the Bay Area Bike Share expansion plan for the Bay Area. The initial proposal developed in conjunction with Motivate, the private Bike Share contractor operating in the Bay Area, called for deploying 7,000 bikes across the Bay Area, greatly expanding the current Bike Share presence in San Francisco and San Jose and for the first time extending bike sharing to the East Bay cities of Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland — at no cost to the taxpayer.
The revised proposal calls for Motivate to also continue to serve through at least June 30, 2016, three Peninsula cities involved in the pilot program that has been ongoing since 2013 — Redwood City, Mountain View and Palo Alto. In addition, MTC is proposing to commit $4.5 million to place an additional 750 bikes in emerging communities not addressed in the expansion proposal currently on the table. MTC’s Commission is scheduled to vote on the Bike Share expansion proposal at its monthly meeting on May 27, 2015.
