Now Easier to Apply for Youth and Senior Clipper Cards

Applications Accepted Via Mail, Email and Fax

OAKLAND, CAGetting youth and senior discounts on transit just got easier. Bay Area youth and seniors can now apply by mail, email or fax for Clipper® cards that will grant discounts on all major Bay Area transit services. Previously, applications had to be submitted in person. Applications are available in English, Spanish and Chinese.

“The switch to mail, email and fax will make it much easier for parents and senior citizens to take advantage of Clipper discounts,” said Carol Kuester, director of Electronic Payments for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). “We’re expecting a significant boost in applications as customers are no longer limited by having to come to a transit agency or Clipper Customer Service Center during business hours. They can apply anytime.”

Customers can download applications from the Clipper website (clippercard.com/discounts). Applications must be accompanied by proof of age. Customers can send a copy of one of the following forms of identification:

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • State-issued identification card or driver’s license (any state)
  • Permanent resident card (“Green Card”)
  • Matricula consular/consular identification card
  • SF City ID card
  • Student identification card with date of birth
  • Military identification/dependent card with date of birth
  • Medical benefit card with date of birth

Applications include instructions for sending copies of proof of age by mail, email or fax. Customers should expect to receive their cards in the mail within seven business days after Clipper receives their application.

Customers who need to get a card right away can still apply in person at a Clipper Customer Service Center or participating transit agency ticket office. Visit clippercard.com for a list of in-person Clipper card application locations and hours. Note that AC Transit requires a photo on Youth Clipper cards in order to purchase an AC Transit Youth Local 31-Day Pass, so youths wanting to purchase this pass must apply in person at AC Transit.

For more information about Youth and Senior Clipper cards, visit clippercard.com or call Clipper Customer Service at (877) 878-8883 or TDD/TYY: 711 or (800) 735-2929 and type “Clipper.”
