Public Transit Provides Free Rides, Extended Hours on New Year’s Eve
Need a ride on New Year’s Eve? Take a late-night bus or train on Sunday as several Bay Area transit agencies are offering fare-free trips and extended service hours.

Muni: Free rides from 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31 through 5 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 1. Clipper Card customers should not tap their cards to make sure they don’t get charged a fare. MuniMobile passes will not be necessary. Metro fare gates will be open on New Year’s Eve starting at 8 p.m. Plan a trip at the New Year's Eve Travel & Transit web page.

AC Transit: Riders will be able to ride all AC Transit buses free of charge, including Transbay and Tempo lines, beginning on 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 until 5 a.m. on Jan. 1. All AC Transit local and Transbay lines will operate Sunday schedules on Jan. 2.

SamTrans: SamTrans will provide free rides, including paratransit, starting at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31, until 3 a.m. Jan. 1. For the rest of New Year’s Day and on Jan. 2, SamTrans will operate a Sunday schedule.

Caltrain: Free fares after 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve. NYE specials: San Jose Diridon to San Francisco departing at 7:42 p.m., 8:42 p.m; San Francisco to San Jose Diridon departing 1 a.m., 1:30 a.m., 2 a.m. On New Year’s Day, Jan .1, Caltrain will operate a weekend schedule.

VTA: Free fares after 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 through 5 a.m. Jan. 1. All VTA transit service will operate a regular weekend schedule, with later service offered on all three light rail lines as well as Bus Route Rapid 500.

BART: On Dec. 31, BART will run standard Sunday service from 8 a.m. to midnight and is providing 1 a.m. extended service for late night riders coming back from the New Year's fireworks show in San Francisco and other celebrations. On Jan. 1, BART will run Sunday service 8 a.m. to midnight. BART no longer sells paper tickets. Clipper cards are available on smart phones.
