New Horizon Perspective Paper: “The Future of Jobs”

Jobs, jobs, jobs.

As part of the Horizon planning initiative undertaken by MTC and the Association of Bay Area Governments, the agencies this month released a new Perspective Paper, “The Future of Jobs,” which explores how emerging economic changes might affect the Bay Area economy in coming decades.

While productive and diverse, our region’s economy is also quite volatile. Examining interrelationships between technological, organizational, salary and location changes, the new Perspective Paper:

• Reviews key trends affecting the Bay Area labor market, including the automation of jobs, the emergence of the “gig economy” and an aging labor force;
• Considers impacts on jobs, wages, location dynamics and job sorting within the region; and
• Identifies strategies to address planning and economic development challenges associated with a changing Bay Area economy.
