Clipper Card Announces America's Cup Commemorative Card

Limited Edition Clipper Card Celebrates the 2013 America's Cup Races

OAKLAND, CA — The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) partnered with the America’s Cup to create a unique and commemorative limited-edition Clipper card in honor of the America’s Cup Summer of Racing in San Francisco. The new America’s Cup card joins other commemorative Clipper cards such as the new Bay Bridge East Span and the Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary Clipper card as well as other collectible Clipper cards produced in partnership with the Golden State Warriors and San Jose Sharks.

“We’re excited to offer an exciting new commemorative Clipper card. We believe this is a great way to celebrate San Francisco hosting the competition for the oldest trophy in international sport taking place this summer. It will promote the use of public transportation to and from the events,” said Carol Kuester, director of Electronic Fare Payments for MTC.

“Even though the America’s Cup is 162 years old, it has a tradition of innovation. One of the most important of these for 2013 is having racing off the city front for the first time, and this special Clipper card will help bring fans to our venues via the Bay’s extensive public transit system,” said Stephen Barclay, chief executive of the America’s Cup.

The limited edition, commemorative Clipper cards are available for purchase in person only at:

The America’s Cup Clipper card showcases a beautiful rendering of an AC72 wing-sailed catamaran featuring the America’s Cup trophy on the sail, with the Bay Bridge in the background.

The card costs $3, and customers can load passes or cash value onto it. The card functions only as an adult Clipper card and does not provide discounts for seniors or youths. A limited number of cards were printed, and they are expected to sell out quickly.

Like its sister cards, the America’s Cup Clipper card can be used on any of eight public transit systems: AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Bus and Ferry, SamTrans, San Francisco Bay Ferry, San Francisco Muni and Valley Transportation Authority — as well as the Dumbarton Express.

For questions about the America’s Cup Clipper card and travel to the America’s Cup venues, visit 511.org or clippercard.com, or call Clipper Customer Service at (877) 878-8883.

Introduced in June 2010, Clipper is that all-in-one transit card that keeps track of any passes, discount tickets, ride books and cash value loaded onto it. Clipper accounted for 621,700 average weekday transactions during July 2013, which amounts to nearly half of all transit rides in the Bay Area. More than 1.3 million active Clipper cards were in circulation as of July 31, 2013.

Clipper is a project of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.
