FasTrak®, FasTrak Flex® and Express Lanes START℠ – Saving Drivers Time and Money
FasTrak® saves drivers time — and often money, too — on Bay Area toll bridges and in Express Lanes.
A FasTrak tag is a small device that mounts on a vehicle’s windshield. Every time you use it, money is automatically deducted from the prepaid balance.
- On the Bay Area’s state-owned toll bridges — including the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo-Hayward bridges — drivers who share the ride with two or more other people and use the carpool lanes can use a FasTrak Standard tag, or a FasTrak Flex® tag to get a discount on the toll price during peak weekday commute times.
- At the Golden Gate Bridge, FasTrak customers pay $1 less than drivers who pay the toll by returning an invoice received in the mail.
- To use Express Lanes, you’ll need a FasTrak Flex tag to indicate how many riders are in the vehicle. Carpools qualify for free or discounted use of the Express Lanes.
New FasTrak customers will automatically be issued a FasTrak Flex tag, so drivers have more opportunities for discounts.
How to Get a FasTrak Toll Tag
You can get your FasTrak tag online, by mail, by phone or in person. Note: As a final step, all accounts need to be set up online, regardless of how you get your tag. Watch this video to see how simple it is.
- Online: Order your tag and set up your account all at once.
- By Mail: Print out this form and mail it to FasTrak, and your tag will be mailed to you.
- Phone: Call toll free 877-229-8655, or dial 511 and ask for “FasTrak” at the first prompt. Phone service is available Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- In Person: Visit the FasTrak customer service center at 375 Beale Street in San Francisco (Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.); or purchase a FasTrak tag at select Costco and Walgreens stores for around $25. Drivers also may add money to their FasTrak accounts with cash at more than 100 Cash Payment Network locations.
FasTrak Does Not Contact Customers by Text
Fraudsters claiming to represent FasTrak or other toll operators sometimes use bogus text messages to convince unwitting mobile phone customers that they have outstanding tolls. FasTrak will never contact customers by text to ask for payment. Learn more about ways to pay for FasTrak.
What are License Plate Accounts?
A License Plate Account is an alternative to a FasTrak tag. This pay-as-you-go option links a license plate to your credit card or debit card account and then charges that account whenever the vehicle crosses a toll bridge. Vehicles with License Plate Accounts cannot use Express Lanes and do not qualify for bridge toll discounts.
What is Express Lanes START?
This trial program aims to make the Interstate 880 and Interstate 80 Express Lanes more affordable for Bay Area residents who earn a low income. Drivers who meet eligibility requirements can apply and – if approved – get at least 50% off all tolled trips in the I-880 and I-80 Express Lanes using FasTrak Flex.
