Marin-Sonoma Coordinated Transit Service Plan (MASCOTS)
The Marin-Sonoma Coordinated Transit Service Plan (MASCOTS) is a collaborative project between MTC and nine transit and funding agencies to create a more connected, frequent transit network.
MASCOTS is focused on making travel more efficient between Sonoma and Marin counties, as well as to and from San Francisco. Transit riders can expect shorter travel times and cost savings thanks to frequent bus and SMART rail service, along with easy transfers along the U.S. 101 and SMART corridor.
MASCOTS Plan Service Recommendations
Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART)
- SMART increases train frequency and expands its span of service to roughly every 30-60 minutes from 4 a.m. to 11 p.,. on weekdays, and roughly every 60-90 minutes from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.
- First southbound train departs Windsor at 3:45 a.m., arriving Larkspur at 5:15 a.m.
- First northbound train departs Larkspur at 5:30 a.m., arriving Windsor at 7 a.m.
- Last southbound train departs Windsor at 8:15 p.m., arriving Larkspur at 9:45 p.m.
- Last northbound train departs Larkspur at 10 p.m., arriving Windsor at 11:15 p.m.
Golden Gate Transit All-Day Routes
- Golden Gate Transit (GGT) Route 101 will operate more frequently between the San Rafael Transit Center and San Francisco (every 30 minutes all day, every 15 minutes during peak periods); it will continue to operate to Novato (every 60 minutes all day, every 30 minutes during peak periods). It will be discontinued between Novato and Santa Rosa and for all communities in between, to be replaced by increased SMART train service.
- The new GGT Route 120 will operate between Strawberry, Marin City, Sausalito and San Francisco (every 30 minutes all day).
- GGT Route 130 will be discontinued.
- GGT Route 150 will be discontinued.
- GGT Route 580 will follow the 580X alignment in Marin County, operating express from Bellam Blvd. to Pt. Richmond. This will save riders approximately 9 minutes between San Rafael and the East Bay.
Golden Gate Transit Commute Routes
- Golden Gate Transit (GGT) will consolidate commute routes in Sonoma County into a single route (Route 172) that operates more trips, more frequently.
- Route 164 and Route 172X are discontinued; all buses operate on the Route 172 alignment that serves Piner and Industrial, Downtown Santa Rosa, the Brookwood Park & Ride, Rohnert Park Expressway, the west side of Petaluma and San Francisco.
Local Bus Operators
- Marin Transit is changing a variety of routes to improve connections for local passengers transferring to regional service. Routes impacted by these changes are concentrated in Southern Marin. Routes 17, 22, 29, 36 and 71 are proposed to have routing changes. Some additional routes are proposed to have schedule changes. For more information, please visit: MarinTransit.org/mascots.
- Santa Rosa CityBus, Sonoma County Transit and Petaluma Transit are planning changes that will make better, direct connections to SMART stations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Will it cost more to ride transit in Marin and Sonoma counties with MASCOTS?
No. Fares are not changing under MASCOTS, but many riders will shift to a different mode or route. As a result, most intercity riders will pay less for their travel under MASCOTS.
Some example scenarios:
- Shannon travels from Petaluma to San Francisco using her Clipper card. With MASCOTS, her new fare will cost 15% less.
- Guillermo travels between Santa Rosa and Novato, and usually pays cash. He will have to convert cash to a Clipper card on the SMART platform. His new fare using his Clipper card will be 45% less than he was paying before.
- For travel between San Rafael and Petaluma, Leslie’s Clipper card fare will go down by 44%.

All fare comparisons are based on July 2025 fares and transfer rules.
How will MASCOTS reduce the time it takes to travel?
MASCOTS would redirect riders from Golden Gate Transit (GGT) Route 101 in Sonoma County to the SMART train, which would connect with the bus in San Rafael.
Both SMART and GGT Route 101 will operate more frequently. Riders going to San Francisco will also be able to transfer from SMART to the Larkspur Ferry in Larkspur. Below is a comparison table of average travel times to San Francisco.
Comparison of Southbound Travel Times Between Santa Rosa and San Francisco
| Time of Day | Current One-Seat Ride Travel Time | Proposed SMART/Golden Gate Ferry | Proposed SMART/Golden Gate Transit Route 101 |
|---|---|---|---|
| AM Peak | 160 minutes | 119 minutes | 123 minutes |
| Midday (noon) | 137 minutes | 135 minutes | 128 minutes |
| PM Peak | 148 minutes | 119 minutes | 124 minutes |
| Night | 124 minutes | No night ferry | 123 minutes |
What is the best alternative for people who board Route 101 farther from a SMART station?
The sevice changes will impact Golden Gate Transit (GGT) Route 101 passengers that use the Piner and Industrial, Rohnert Parkway Expressway and Petaluma Fairgrounds park-and-ride lots or ride from Cotati Hub.
Below are proposed alternatives:
| Current Park and Ride Options | Recommended Alternative Parking |
|---|---|
| Piner and Industrial | Use bus route 172, or park at the Sonoma County Airport SMART or Rohnert Park SMART stations and take the train. |
| Rohnert Parkway Expressway | Use bus route 172 or park at the Rohnert Park SMART station and take the train. |
| Cotati Hub | Use Sonoma County Transit routes 10, 48 or 48X, or park at the Cotati SMART station and take the train. |
| Petaluma Fairgrounds | Use bus route 172 or park at the Petaluma Downtown SMART station and take the train. |
What public transportation options are there to get to Sonoma County after the last SMART northbound train departs?
- From April 12-June 30, 2026, Sonoma County Transit's new Route 51 will provide one late-night round-trip between Santa Rosa and Novato on a temporary basis. The southbound trip leaves Santa Rosa as the last 44 of the night and turns into the 51 in Petaluma, connecting with the last southbound 101 of the night at Redwood & Grant in Novato. The northbound 51 serves Copeland Transit Mall, Rohnert Park SMART Station and Santa Rosa Transit Mall only.
- After June 30, 2026, there will be no public transportation options. Passengers will need to use a ride-share or taxi service.
Can I pay for SMART routes with cash?
SMART does not accept cash on board trains, but Clipper cards can be purchased with cash on station platforms. Alternately, riders may use their smart phone to pay for rides using Apple Pay or Google Pay.
SMART also offers a mobile app that can be used by riders who are not connecting to/from other transit lines.
Does SMART carry bikes and luggage?
Yes, SMART has more and better bicycle and luggage storage space than Golden Gate Transit does.
